Residents Enjoy Steam Engine

Several of the residents enjoyed watching as the steam engine rolled into Whitewater on Friday, September 7.  Imagine the interest of the residents as some are long-time train enthusiasts; one resident worked for the railroad. Thanks to the soldiers for taking time to visit with the residents on the bus.  Peaches & Cream were enjoyed by the residents in August.  The fresh peaches from Idaho and rich cream from Dillons made a tasty activity treat.  The uses and benefits of Vinegar was the topic of discussion in June.  August brought back memories of Elvis Presley and Rock and RollNational Nursing Home Week was celebrated in May with activities for the residents and the staff.  Lunch out in Old Town and a visit to the Museum of World Treasures was enjoyed.  Corn on the Cob from the residents’ garden was a treat one day last month.  Others enjoyed the ripe tomatoes, cucumbers and Idaho plums.  The 4-H Club demonstrated items and ribbons from the Butler County Fair.  One of our most enjoyable times occurs each Monday when the Myers Family comes with musical entertainment.  Residents and staff look forward to enjoying the homemade Cake at the monthly birthday parties.  Fishing at Harvey County East Lake is scheduled for the first week in October.

Text Box: What’s Happening in Housekeeping ? by Vickie Ellis, Supervisor
Text Box: Our day starts early at 6:00 AM.! Since carpet has been installed in the hallways, we begin our day by vacuuming all the carpet. Our normal daily routine is to clean every resident’s room, restocking paper products and supplies as needed. I say “normal” because everyday has its surprises. Other duties that are required include taking out trash, cleaning the main dining room and Sunflower Lane dining area after breakfast and lunch, cleaning shower rooms and the public bathrooms, plus other areas in the facility. Special projects during the month may include waxing and buffing tile floors, steam cleaning furniture and carpets, washing windows and washing down beds.
Our department works seven days a week with two housekeepers scheduled each day. We currently have two full-time and two part-time employees. They are Art Glenn, Chanel Knight, Derek Knowles and myself, Vickie Ellis. At this time, I am looking for another part-time person in my department. If you would like to work a few days a month, please call me at 799-2181.

Text Box: I saw a garden the other day,
Each flower special in its own way.
For while they bloomed each on their own,
It was together their beauty shone.
This year the Board of Directors designated funds for the improvement of the grounds at the Manor. Bushes were removed and many plants and flowers were added. Most of the plants are perennials so that the flowers will return again next year without the need to purchase more.
As we plan for next spring, it is our wish to plant bulbs this fall. If anyone has bulbs to share, we would appreciate your donation. Also, if you like to plant, we could use your help. To volunteer your time, please contact Jodi Silbernagel in the office.
Jodi demonstrated her talent by selecting the flowers and Derek Knowles worked planting and watering them so that they, too, show their colors as they bloom together; one enhancing the beauty of the other. Thanks to Jodi and Derek Knowles for their hard work during those hot summer days to brighten the face of the Manor
Two fountains were added this year. One inside the foyer and one on the outside; replacing the one that was leaking. If you have not seen the décor in the foyer, take time to stop and take a look.
