Text Box: My name is Renae Kersenbrock. I became the interim administrator at Wheat State Manor September 25. I am excited to be at Wheat State and be a part of the ministry that takes place here.
I am a native Kansan, born and raised on a farm in northwest Kansas. Yes, I’m used to the comments about that being God’s country because only God would want to live there. Be that as it may, that is where my roots are. I am married to Dwayne, my partner of 28 years. We have two grown children, Kyle and Katie. We live in Newton. My husband commutes to McPherson. He has worked for NRCS (Natural Resource Conservation Service) for 22 years.
I started working in long-term care in my home-town nursing home as a Business Office Manager. As I worked on completion of a Bachelor’s Degree, including the practicum for administration seemed a natural progression. After receiving my license, I accepted a position at Legacy Park in Peabody. I worked there for two years.
I have had the wonderful experience of knowing my grandparents and great-grandparents. I am sure their influence had a great deal to do with my love for the elderly. I also have the joy of being inspired by residents that exemplify positive attitudes and a concern for others.
Rural Kansas has so much to offer. At the heart of it are people that have not forgotten the Golden Rule and know how to put others before themselves. I look forward to meeting you. I welcome you to stop in and get acquainted.

Text Box: Everyone has demonstrated patience above and beyond during the current renovation of the nursing desk area and the hallways. If you haven’t seen the new nursing desk with its beautiful cabinets and counter top, you are in for a surprise as you enter the facility. The new appearance includes carpeting in the “round room” and down each hall way.
A contest is being held to name the round room. This was a suggestion from one of the residents during a sleepless night drinking coffee in the dining room.
Each hall has been given a theme with décor coordinating with the theme. A big thank you to all those who brought and donated items for the halls and to Jodi
Silbernagel and Marie Wisdom for arranging the displays.
There are finishing touches to be done in the halls with painting and trim. New furniture for the round room will be ordered soon that includes a round table and chairs and other occasional chairs to make the room a warm comfortable living room for residents and guests. The project should be complete in time for the annual community Thanksgiving Service in November.
Change is challenging, but we can honestly say the outcome of this change is positive.

Text Box: Craft Fair and Bake Sale
The annual craft fair and bake sale will be held Friday, November 3, at the Manor. The Auxiliary is in charge of the bake sale. Funds raised will be used to purchase equipment for the care of the residents. There will be home baked breads, pies, cakes and cookies, just to mention a few of the goodies that will be for sale.
We invite those who have craft items to sell or display, to call Tricia Fee to reserve space for your craft. There is no charge for you to have a table at the fair.
Come, join us for an afternoon of food, fun and fellowship! The time is 1:30 - 4:00 P.M. (Did I mention peppernuts and new year’s cookies? And what about that apricot pie?)
Stock up on goodies for Thanksgiving. Most items can be frozen for a later meal, if you can wait that long!

Text Box: Residents Enjoy Bunnies
We are never too old to enjoy one of God’s creations All the residents enjoyed seeing bunnies this summer as Carolyn Coleman brought in her rabbits and later brought bunnies for everyone to see and hold.
Shown here is resident Carolyn Cartmell with one of the small bunnies. They were a delight for both the residents and staff. A big thank you to Carolyn Coleman for taking the time to share these adorable creatures.
Carolyn Cartmell has been a resident at the Manor since March of 2004. She has become friends with many of the residents and staff members. As you can see here, her smile is contagious. She enjoys outings, shopping, crafts and listening to gospel music. Carolyn worked as a Certified Nurse Aide and was employed at Wheat State Manor in 1993. With her training in nursing, she keeps us on the right track.
Text Box: If you are familiar with the song “Joy Comes In The Morning”, you will know why this is a fitting reference to Joy Martin, LBSW. Joy is at her desk early morning until late in the evening. She joined the staff of Wheat State as the director of Social Services and Admissions. She keeps the residents happy and meets each one’s individual requests and wants. If she is not admitting a new resident, she may be seen moving furniture or giving a tour of facility to a family.
Joy worked in the engineering field for over twenty-five years before going into social work in 2002. She is currently working on her Masters Degree in gerontology at Wichita State University. Joy lives in Wichita. She has a daughter and two sons.
Joy’s favorite season is autumn when thoughts turn to cooler weather. She wishes to remind residents’ families and friends who store and rotate their clothing between seasons that it’s “about that time.” Please make sure clothing is marked with their names, and weed out ill-fitting clothes. Staff will be glad to assist!

She organized the start of a photo album of staff members and their favorite people and special occasions. The idea of naming the new round room and have it become a contest was a late night idea of hers. Thanks, Barbara, for making WSM a fun place. Barbara, you are a queen!
